The history of the discovery of aspirin was started thousands of years ago since the days of ancient Egypt during which the Ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates used the bark of Willow as a painkiller, fever and inflammation and efficacy of this drug is widespread.
Aspirin and Willow bark
Reverend Edward Stone of Chipping Norton, England, was the first to publish the medical use of aspirin. In 1763, he has managed to take medication against various diseases by using these compounds. In 1826, Italian investigators, Brugnatelli and Fontana, carried out tests on the use of a compound from the leaves of willow as a medical agent. Two years later, in 1828, a German pharmacist, Buchner, managed to isolate the compound and named salicin derived from the Latin willow, Salix ie.These compounds have antipyretic activity that is able to cure fever.
Research on these compounds continued until in 1830 when a French scientist named Leroux managed to crystallize the salicin. This study was followed by a German pharmacist named Merck in 1833. As a result of his research, he managed to get a crystalline compound salicin in a very pure. Salicylic acid compound itself only discovered in 1839 by Raffaele Piria with empirical formula C7H6O3.
Felix Hoffmann
Bayer Brazilians is the first company to successfully create the compound of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). The idea for modifying the salicylic acid compounds against the backdrop of the many negative effects of these compounds. In 1845, Arthur Eichengrun from the company Bayer suggested the idea to add acetyl groups from the compound of salicylic acid to reduce the negative effects while enhancing the efficiency and tolerance. In 1897, Felix Hoffman managed to continue the idea and created a compound acetylsalicylic acid which was then commonly known as aspirin.Aspirin is an acronym for:
Code:
A: acetyl group
SPIR: name of the interest in Latin
spiraea: extra syllables which are often used
in: for the substance during the
Aspirin is the first synthetic substance in the world and the leading cause of industrial development farmateutikal.Bayer aspirin as a trademark registered on March 6, 1899. Felix Hoffmann was not the first attempt to create a compound of aspirin.Earlier in 1853, a French scientist named Frederick Gerhardt has tried to create a new compound of a combination of acetyl chloride and sodium salicylate.
Bayer lost the trademark rights after allied forces seize and sell assets outside the company after the First World War. In the United States (U.S.), the right to use the name of aspirin have been purchased by the U.S. through the Sterling Drug Inc.., In 1918. Although the patent has not expired, Bayer failed to deter rivals from the imitation of the chemical formula and using the name aspirin. As a result, Sterling failed to block the "aspirin" of the use of a generic word. In other countries like Canada, "Aspirin" is still considered a protected trademark.
Effect of aspirin as first aid to cope with the pain or the pain has been used over the last 100 years. Because of the popularity, Aspirin a good meal of research by scientists in finding a new or criticized.
"Aspirin is the drug most widely studied both in finding new or deny it," said Professor Peter Elwood, MD, DSc, FRCP, Department of Epidemilogy FFPHM from Cardiff University in the UK College of Medicine when speaking on the show "Scientific Tutorial for Journalists' Bayer Schering Pharma, which was held at the Marco Polo Beijing, China.
All results of the study said Professor Elwood then performed a meta-analysis to ensure their validity. From where then comes another property Aspirin is not just pain relief, pain and fever. Aspirin developed into therapeutic and prevention of cardiovascular disease (heart and blood vessels blood / stroke).
According to Professor Thomas A Pearson, MD, MPH, PhD from the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York USA, in the event of World Congress of Cardiology in Beijing June 16 to 19, 2010, Aspirin can prevent blood clotting main triggers of heart and stroke.
The use of low dose every day for people at risk for cardiovascular disease shown to decrease the risk of blood clots. The risk of blood clotting occurs in people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity (overweight), smoking and less mobile.
Aspirin as a therapeutic research and the prevention of cardiovascular developed since the 1970s. Since then Aspirin is a 'friend' compulsory heart patients and high cholesterol.
"The results of six studies showed aspirin can reduce the risk of fatal heart attacks and strokes ranging from reduction of 15 percent to 66 percent," says Professor Pearson.
Use of Aspirin in small doses daily of 100 mg or less for people at risk for cardiovascular disease, have also been protected by Bayer with the compound safe to avoid stomach irritation. Bayer makes the effectiveness of ASA is better than any other generic drugs because it uses only low doses for cardiovascular prevention.
This was echoed by Dr. Ronally Rasmin, SpJP of Mercy Hospital Jakarta Budhi in his written explanation on Sunday (20/06/2010) which acknowledges the workings of low-dose aspirin is more extensive.
"Generic ASA non-coated, the dose is greater and more indicated in cases of fever, pain, and for children. The output of low-dose ASA Bayer already coated tablets, digestive cell loss in the measured and indicated because the way it works to a broader number of diseases such as cardiovascular, smoking, dyslipidemia other than angina, "he said.
Professor Pearson said the use of aspirin is proven effective for cardiovascular research has also been followed by aspirin for the treatment and prevention of cancer, Alzheimer's and preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy).
"There have been many discoveries that could Aspirin for prevention of colon cancer (colorectal), breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, Alzheimer's and pre-eclampsia who seem to benefit just waiting for further evidence," says Professor Pearson.
Professor Pearson acknowledged, attention is still focused on the benefits of aspirin treatment and cardiovascular prevention. But he said other studies have promising use of aspirin is more dynamic in future times.
The public will be waiting much less of a surprise that not only aspirin as a pain medication and fever, but the drugs and cardiovascular prevention. Is Aspirin a legendary name in the medical world during this century will bring up a new property again?
